Pilgrimage to Poland

As part of the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of our establishment as a Lieutenancy, a pilgrimage to Poland was organised, led by Ambassador Roberto Buontempo, Lieutenant for Malta.

The programme included visits to Kraków, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Jasna Góra, Wadowice and Miechów, among other significant sites.

During the visit to Miechów, our Lieutenant was the keynote speaker at a symposium commemorating both the anniversary of the dedication of the parish church in Miechów and the anniversary of the consecration of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

Following the symposium, members of the Maltese delegation and their companions were presented with the Miechów Pilgrim’s Cross.

Special thanks go to Comm. Stanisław Osmenda for his generous hospitality, to Dame Comm. Maria Busuttil Delbridge for co-ordinating the logistics and to Mgr. Comm. Paul Carmel Vella, who acted as our Spiritual Director during the Pilgrimage.

Feast of Saint John the Baptist

On the 24th of June, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, our Lieutenant Amb. Roberto Buontempo was invited to attend the annual Promotions and Awards Ceremony of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

This year’s event held special significance for us, as our confrere, Mgr Paul Carmel Vella, was honoured with a promotion to Conventual Chaplain Grand Cross ad honorem. We warmly congratulate Mgr Vella on this well-deserved recognition and thank him for his faithful service.

Thanksgiving Mass of dedicated service by Dr Maria Montebello, a Dame in our Order, as Head of School at Saint Ignatius College

A thanksgiving Mass was held to mark the 13 years of dedicated service by Dr Maria Montebello, a Dame in our Order, as Head of School at Saint Ignatius College, Prof Edward de Bono Handaq Middle School. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Joseph Galea-Curmi, in the presence of students, staff, and invited guests.

Our Lieutenant, Amb. Roberto Buontempo, attended this special occasion, which also marked a new chapter in Dame Maria’s journey, as she prepares to take on her new role as Rector of Saint Aloysius College.

The celebration also included the inauguration of several beautiful murals within the school grounds, including one entirely dedicated to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, a tribute to our Order’s mission and values.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations and blessings to Dame Maria as she embarks on this new mission!

Investiture ceremonies of the Scottish Lieutenancy

St Andrew’s Metropolitan Cathedral, Glasgow

Our Lieutenant Amb. Roberto Buontempo accompanied by his spouse Josette, attended the Investiture ceremonies of the Scottish Lieutenancy, presided over by Brigadier Joseph d’Inverno, Lieutenant for Scotland.

The occasion also provided an excellent opportunity to meet Professor Anthony Busuttil, a distinguished Maltese expatriate, and his wife Angela, both esteemed members of the Order.

Feast of Christ the Redeemer

On the invitation of the Archpriest of Senglea, Chev. Can. Robin Camilleri, our Lieutenancy participated in a mass and procession to commemorate the feast of Christ the Redeemer.

The mass was celebrated with the parish of Qala, Gozo to mark the 25th anniversary since the much-revered statue of the Redeemer was sent to this village.

This feast still draws large crowds from all over the islands and has lots of devotees.

AGM 2025

The Knights, Dames, and Council Members of the Lieutenancy of Malta, together with our Lieutenant Amb. Roberto Buontempo, gathered for the 30th Annual General Meeting on Saturday, 21st June 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in St. Julian’s.

The meeting featured a series of presentations by members of the Council and various commissions, showcasing the significant work carried out by the Lieutenancy over the past year. One of the key moments of the event was the launch of a commemorative medal marking the 25th anniversary since Malta’s elevation to a Lieutenancy.

Following the AGM, members and their spouses enjoyed a lunch held at the same venue. The event was very well attended, reflecting the strong commitment and unity within the Maltese Lieutenancy.

Feast of Corpus Christi

22nd June 2025

On the occasion of the Feast of Corpus Christi, members of our Order, led by Lieutenant Amb. Roberto Buontempo, took part in the liturgical celebrations held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Paul in Mdina.

The Holy Mass was celebrated by our Grand Prior, His Grace Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, and was followed by a reverent Eucharistic procession through the historic streets of Mdina. Among those present were children who had received their First Holy Communion earlier in the day.

Feast of Corpus Christi held in Għasri and feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fontana.

Our Order took part in two solemn religious celebrations in Gozo this month.

On Saturday 7th June, members of the Order participated in the Feast of Corpus Christi held in Għasri.

On Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th June, the Order was also present for the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fontana.

The Order was led on both occasions by Chev. Comm. Euchar Mizzi, Delegate for Gozo, and Rev. Can. John Muscat, Gozo Prior.

Investiture in Solothurn, Switzerland.

Our Lieutenant, Amb. Roberto Buontempo, and Treasurer, Dame Glorianne Vassallo Cardona, accompanied by their respective spouses, had the honour of attending last weekend’s Investiture in Solothurn, Switzerland.

The invitation came from Donata Krethlow Benziger, Lieutenant for Switzerland and Liechtenstein and a long-time friend of our Lieutenancy.
